Home Insurance – Mandatory for All Tenants

For all rentals in France, tenants are legally required to take out a home insurance policy (assurance habitation) covering their stay.

This insurance is mandatory and must be active from the first day of the lease.

What does the insurance cover?

A standard home insurance policy covers:

  • damage caused by fire,

  • water damage,

  • accidental damage,

  • tenant liability towards the property and neighbouring apartments.

What is required?

Before moving in, tenants must:

  • take out a valid home insurance policy,

  • provide an insurance certificate to Montmartre Apartments,

  • ensure the insurance remains valid for the entire duration of the stay.

Why this matters

Home insurance protects both the tenant and the property owner and is an essential part of renting responsibly in France.

Failure to provide valid insurance may delay or prevent move-in.

If you need assistance choosing an insurance provider or have questions about coverage, we are happy to help.

Home Insurance – Examples of Accepted Providers

There are several reliable insurance providers in France offering policies suitable for students, temporary residents and international tenants. Commonly used insurance providers include:

  • Luko
A modern, fully digital insurer, popular with international tenants and students.

  • MAIF
A well-established French insurer known for solid coverage and customer service.

  • AXA
A major international insurance group with comprehensive home insurance policies.

  • Allianz
An international provider offering robust coverage options.

  • MACIF

  • Generali

Tenants are free to choose any insurer, as long as the policy covers tenant liability (responsabilité locative) and remains valid for the full duration of the stay.
